We spend most of this show with the founders and the builders. This episode, we sat down with an allocator — one of the people on the other side of the capital table, the person who decides where the money actually goes. Russ Lazaruk is a Portfolio Manager and Managing Director at NCP Digital Family Office, a multi-family office out of Victoria, British Columbia built on a genuinely different premise: that world-class, independent, fiduciary wealth management should not be reserved for billionaires. He has spent more than three decades in the markets — boutique dealers, a major bank-owned dealer, a global investment bank — and he is a certified responsible investment specialist, holding both the RIS and RIAC designations. He did not arrive the traditional way. Before any of it, Russ was a farmer. He worked in forestry. He was a soldier. He left a logging camp for finance in 1992 without fully understanding the industry he was walking into. In this conversation: → Why prosperity, in his words, comes down to what is enough — and why that number is different for every single person → How to separate the signal from the noise, using the Strait of Hormuz as the case study: the bombs were the noise, energy independence was the signal → Why a specialist can succeed in parts of this industry, but an allocator has to be a generalist → Inside NCP's buy-and-build private equity book — a Quebec manufacturer bought from its founders and grown through seven mergers → Dry transformers, data centers, and the electrification of everything → Why entrepreneurs understand risk inside their own business and consistently misjudge it in the public markets → An honest allocator answer on whether a women-led hybrid venture and private equity fund fits a family office mandate → Why he believes in diversity at the board level — and how to build a real skills matrix instead of a room full of friends who agree Russ Lazaruk — NCP Digital Family Office LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/russell-lazaruk-11b59b4/

About the Guest

Russ Lazaruk is a Portfolio Manager and Managing Director at NCP Digital Family Office, a multi-family office headquartered in Victoria, British Columbia, serving clients across Canada, Europe, Latin America, and the Caribbean. NCP operates on an independent, fiduciary, product-agnostic model — a customer of financial products rather than a seller of them — and runs both a public markets absolute-return strategy and a direct-investment private equity book built on a buy-and-build strategy. Russ entered finance in 1992, leaving a logging camp and a career in forestry for the markets. Over the following three decades he worked with boutique investment dealers, a major Canadian bank-owned dealer, and a global investment bank, and served as a branch manager and associate director leading teams of advisors. He holds the Responsible Investment Specialist (RIS) and Responsible Investment Advisor Certification (RIAC) designations and integrates environmental, social, and governance considerations directly into portfolio construction. Beyond the markets, Russ has served on and chaired a number of nonprofit boards, including as Board Chair of Camosun College, and is a vocal advocate for governance discipline and genuine diversity of background at the board level. He and his wife have five children and nine grandchildren, and both of their fathers served together in the Navy.
