Melinda Powelson is the CEO of Match Engine — a platform business born out of one of the earliest lead-generation companies on the internet, and one that is now reinventing itself in real time. What started as a Denver recycling company founded by her father just after the first Earth Day has grown into a matching platform connecting customers and service providers across North America — spanning shredding, medical waste, electronic recycling, and now AI-powered sales tools. In this episode, Melinda sits down with Brandi Kolosky, Founder and General Partner of Sacral Capital, Sacral Fund I, and Sacral Sisters, to talk about what it actually takes to lead a legacy business through an industry pivot — with data, nerve, and a team that trusts you. Here's what you'll learn: → How Match Engine's internally-built AI tool improved close rates by 21 percent in a single year — and how they're now beta-testing it with a partner as a new line of business → What it takes to grow a business from 1.8 million dollars in sales to over 5 million → Why Melinda "inherited" the CEO role and what a business coach taught her about actually leading → The three reports Melinda looks at every single day — revenue by vertical, marketing attribution, and agent-level conversion rate → Why AI is more equitable than a human manager when it comes to reviewing call-center performance → What Melinda reads first when she's evaluating a founder — and why energy matters more than intelligence We also get into the data on women founders and capital — the research showing that women-led companies return 1.78 dollars per dollar invested versus 1.31 for male-led companies — the wealth transfer moving into women's hands, the shortage of women financial advisors serving them, and why every ecosystem gets stronger when women build it together. Melinda's grounded, operator's view on trust, accountability, and care — what those words actually look like on a plant floor and inside a 27-person team — is one of the most quietly powerful conversations we've had on the show. 🔗 Learn more about Match Engine: MatchEngine.com 🔗 Connect with Melinda on LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/melpowelson/ 🔗 Take the Capital Readiness Scorecard: PlungeIntoProsperity.com

About the Guest
Melinda Powelson is the Chief Executive Officer of Match Engine, a North American matching platform that connects customers with service providers across shredding, medical waste, electronic recycling, and AI-powered sales tooling. Born out of one of the earliest lead-generation platforms on the internet, Match Engine evolved from the family recycling business her father, David Powelson, founded in Denver just after the first Earth Day. Under Melinda's leadership, the internet-native corner of that legacy — originally $1.8M in sales — has grown to over $5M and now operates a 27-person team, four business verticals, and an internally-developed AI sales tool that improved call-center close rates by 21% in a single year. A Pacific Lutheran University graduate and English major at heart, Melinda leads with a philosophy grounded in trust, accountability, and care — and is actively connecting with entrepreneurs and operators building technology and AI-driven businesses.
